Grade increase with sample size: Seem to remember this is covered in JK's good write-up on Kim pipes. Don't have the url handy, but I bet our team librarian will chime in on this. ;-)

From what I recall, it is mostly an effect of the diamonds not being evenly distributed. Any small sample has a small chance of hitting a high-grade pocket, whereas bigger samples are more likely to catch one. But I think your points about less destruction and chance of finding bigger macros also play a role.
