Carlists

I didn't mention the anarchosyndicalist's either. I'm just trying to keep it simple.

I always thought the Carlists were bit players. They had been stirring up trouble in the Basque provinces for nearly 150 years, without any great affect. Franco was the leader of the Nationalist movement.

Responding to your earlier point...
Spain in the twenties and thirties had a highly developed socialist
political system. However it wasn't communist (i.e Leninist) so
it formed a prime target for Comintern, whose goal was to claim Communist leadership of the world socialist movement. It's mission specifically excluded non-Communist socialists.

Franco reacted to the socialist coalition, not to ComIntern per se.
It's ironic that the Comintern led counter revolution allowed Franco to establish the longest running Fascist state of the 20th century.

Having said that, I think Franco would have a hard time making the top 100 list. Put him on the reserve.

Anyone thinking of starting a top 100 list for the millenium?
