OT. My record. I guess I am bragging, but there are not many people who I can share this info with. I figured out my portfolio gains year by year and here goes...

2013 was not very good because REITS were down/flat. I've been predominately in REITS and pref stocks since the crash. Before that energy was my focus. Before that a had no focus.

My simple average for the past 10 years is 20.8% vs the NYSE 8.1%.
This is the 1st time I calculated that and I am celebrating. :o)

My overall view of stock picking: Picking the correct sector is much more important than picking the right stock in the sector.

thanks to the thread for the assist in all this... I'd specify a half dozen individual posters, but you know who you are (and I won't risk omitting someone).
