I learned lots of good and useful stuff (in your terms, I imagine) at school - basic maths, chemistry, physics, all those disciplines without which there'd be no need for pole-climbing. Other stuff that didn't have application in getting a job, making money, was also encountered. You and Maurice scoff at poetry (I'm happy to be the catalyst that brings you together) but there is more to life than making a buck, and I consider myself fortunate to have been exposed to Shakespeare, Keats, Pope, Hopkins, Dickens and many other writers at that age.

It's true that you can educate yourself at any stage of life, but the things you learn when young really stick. Curiosity is the most important requirement for learning new things. It's also important to have sufficient self-awareness to recognize the limits of your knowledge.
