"Those folks are not going to surrender, or welcome us, it now seems" Right, it's those folks who have an interest in maintaining the status quo that are doing the fighting. They're quick to execute anyone that appears sympathetic to the US. Don't think that when you read reports of Iraqi soldiers rounding up male kurds over the age of 14 that anyone will ever see those guys alive again. Same in Basra, the locals there hate the soldiers, but what are they going to do? They have to lie low, play it cool or else they risk losing their lives at the hands of Iraqi soldiers.
