so you have more taxes with a higher total tax burden if you impose a national VAT.

The underlying flaw with the VAT is that it's not visible, which makes it easier to increase taxes. A sales tax is at least visible.

That's one of the stronger arguments against changing to a sales/VAT tax in practice

And yet you see in mentioned almost never. You'd think at least AARP would have taken up the issue when talk of a national sales tax ramps up. Surely not all the VAT fans on this thread are not youngsters. I can appreciate voting against interest because some things are important enough to make the sacrifice. But supporting a VAT without giving a second thought to the inherent intergenerational unfairness...
