Now that I have reaquainted myself with Oracle architecture:

Oracle has done away with the single task architecture as of 7.3

It would have been possible in certain environments (Unix) to link a misbehaving program single-task with the Oracle kernel and step on the kernel's address space and corrupt things. In other environments (VMS) that address space was protected, regardless of the single-task architecture. It made sense (to some) to do things single-task on VMS because the overhead of creating a process in VMS is significantly more than in Unix. With a two-task architecture, communication between the client and server is basically a whole bunch of remote procedure calls and the kernel's address space is protected.

Currently, I believe, Oracle does not provide the kind of low-level calls in the API that would be required to manage complex datatypes a la DataBlades. I expect that there will be additional calls added to the API to support Cartridges. Again, I'm a little behind the curve on this one. At Oracle OpenWorld last month, the folks from Oracle Corp. made a big deal of the fact that DataBlades must be linked into the Infomix kernel and can potentially corrupt the database. Of course, this could just be an exercise in propogating FUD concerning DataBlades, but I expect that Oracle will be careful to avoid even the perception of similar possibilities for corruption with Cartridges in Oracle8.
