Actually, it started out a discussion of conviction, and somehow metastasized into a discussion of extremism...In any event, on the score of "due process" as a guarantee of fairness, we are in agreement, supposing due process to be available. For example, I agree with Lincoln's criticisms of John Brown for taking the law into his own hands. However, we do not always have recourse to due process: sometimes we are forced to fight. Do you think that the Allies were wrong to exceed pure defense and impose more or less democratic regimes on the Axis powers? Do you think that the SCLC was wrong to commit acts of civil disobedience, and to persuade people to put life and limb at risk for the sake of the movement? Was there reason enough for the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War, or should we all be British subjects?
