Le secrétaire d'Etat américain, Colin Powell, et le chef de la diplomatie française, Dominique de Villepin, vont discuter et déjeuner ensemble, vendredi 6 février, à New York, en marge de la conférence des pays donateurs pour le Libéria, organisée par l'ONU.
The American Secretary of State, Colin Powell, and the head of French diplomacy, Dominique de Villepin, are going to discuss and lunch together, Friday the 6th of Fabruary, in New York, on the sideline of the conference of donor countries to Liberia, organized by the UN.
Jacques Chirac a reçu l'éditorialiste de politique étrangère du Washington Post, Jim Hoagland, auquel il a expliqué que lorsqu'il parle d'un "monde multipolaire", ce n'est pas pour défier ou réduire la puissance américaine, mais pour justifier le renforcement de la relation transatlantique. Le soixantième anniversaire du débarquement en Normandie, le 6 juin, sera probablement célébré en présence de George Bush. Du moins le président français a-t-il invité son homologue américain à participer aux cérémonies.
Jacques Chirac received Washington Post foreign policy editorialist, Jim Hoagland, to whom he explained that when he spoke of a multipolar world, it was not to defy or reduce American power, but to justify the reinforcement of the transatlantique relationship. The 60th anniversary of the Normandy landings, June 6th, will probably be celebrated in the presence of George Bush. At least the French president has invited his American counterpart to participate in the ceremonies.

Alors que José Maria Aznar, président du gouvernement espagnol, a été invité à prononcer un discours au Congrès, mercredi 4 février, honneur jusque-là réservé au premier ministre britannique, Tony Blair, M. Bush peut avoir intérêt à montrer qu'il peut parler non seulement avec les pays qui l'ont soutenu au sujet de l'Irak, mais aussi avec ceux qui se sont opposés à lui.
The intention is a warming of relations between France and the United States. On the French side, as said a parlimentarian Tuesday in Washington, Mr. Chirac can only seek to end the confrontation in which he engaged a year ago, with the American leadrs. If Mr. Bush is elected in November, he will be the head of the United States for four more years.
S'il est battu, les responsables français auraient tort de croire que la sympathie de son successeur démocrate leur sera acquise. Beaucoup de démocrates pensent, comme presque tous les républicains, que, lors de la crise irakienne, la France a été déloyale vis-à-vis des Etats-Unis.
If he is beaten, French officials would be wrong to beliefe that the sympathy of his Democratic successor will be gained. Many Democrats think, as do nearly all Republicans, that, during the Iraq crisis, France was disloyal to the United States.

Présidé par Amory Houghton, député républicain de l'Etat de New York, ce groupe compte, aujourd'hui, 37 députés et 14 sénateurs des deux partis. "Il n'avait jamais existé, jusqu'à maintenant, de caucus français, alors qu'il y avait des caucus anglais, allemand et, même, suisse", a déclaré M. Levitte.
Presided over by Amory Houghton, Republican congressman from the state of New York, the group counts, today, 37 congressmen and 14 senators from both parties. "There never was, until now, a French caucus, although there is an English caucus, a German one, and even a Swiss,"declared Mr. Levitte.

Tous les membres du French Caucus n'ont pas participé à la réception. Plusieurs, parmi les plus titrés, se sont abstenus d'y paraître. Les présents ont applaudi au goût du spectacle, très américain. M. Levitte a fait venir des acteurs costumés en La Fayette, Napoléon, Murat et Benjamin Franklin, pour rappeler l'ancienneté de l'alliance entre les deux pays.
Not all the members of the French Caucus participated in the reception. Several, among the most titled, abstained from appearing. Those present applauded the taste of the show, very American. Mr. Levitte got actors dressed as Lafayette, Napoleon, Murat, and Benjamin Franklin to come and recall the ancient alliance between the two countries.
