They do, but I don't know how much. As I remember they are a member of OPEC and are now in the UN Security Council.

BTW: Hafez-al Assad (now thankfully dead), had never achieved the notoriety as a merciless tyrant that his neighbor, Hussein did. However, he was no less ruthless. I'll bet that he and Hussein have murdered more muslims than anyone else in history.
