Microsoft Drops on Concern About Consumer PC Sales Slowdown

Consumer products make up 20 percent to 25 percent of Microsoft's revenue, and the company released a new version of its software for consumers in September. That product, Windows Millennium, could be hurt by any slowdown in consumer PC sales.

``As goes PC growth and sales, so goes Microsoft's success,'' said William Epifanio, an analyst at J.P. Morgan Securities. He said the problems could cause Microsoft to fall short of analyst expectations for its fiscal second quarter, which ends Dec. 31.

No New Guidance

Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft hasn't changed the guidance it gave on
Oct. 18, when the company reported earnings for the September quarter and said
it expected sales in the current period to rise by a percentage in the low teens.
Spokeswoman Caroline Boren declined to comment on whether Microsoft is
seeing the same problems as Gateway and whether that could harm consumer
sales.
