There was also mention of Dish and DirectTV on CnnFn after the close and they discussed the positioning of cable vs. DTH satellite and basically they opinion was that satellite had taken all the subs they were going to get. Of course I disagree, but that what they said. The discussion was part of a larger discussion around the Texas ruling over long distance, and they were talking about cable companies because they saw the ruling as bad for cable, but everything else looked good for cable in their opinion.

I really like DISH more now than ever, WHY you ask? Because the RBOC's will be rolling out xDSL in mass this year. US WEST rolled it out in Phoenix a month ago and the orders are flooding in, according to US WEST. So the RBOC's will have a high speed data offering, but still not video since they will not have the infrastructure installed to do switched digital video over their copper plant. That has just not panned out for them, the xDSL modems just don't offer high speeds over all the installed copper plant. But the data service is fast enough and it can be done now. So what do the RBOC's do to get the telephone subscribers' entertainment business too? They partner with a DTH provider like DISH, that's how. Now they've got the voice, data and entertainment business from the residential subscribers and maybe soon they will also get the long distance business too. Finally we will have the "all on one bill" service provider that the RBOC's have been shooting for the last 3 years.

DISH is gonna have a great year in '98. A year from now you can look back at this post, and you'll be kicking yourself if you did not load up at these prices. Another bonus, low interest rates. Hopefull DISH can retire some high cost debt and refinance at lower rates.

Cheers
