NEC Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd. Wednesday confirmed that the companies have separately stopped production on a temporary basis at fabs in Japan to lower global semiconductor output amid a continuing market slump.

A spokeswoman for NEC said the company's Kumamoto fab in Kyushu, Japan, which makes microcontrollers and ASICs, will close for five days but that no other NEC fabs in Japan have been affected. The spokeswoman said NEC's DRAM fab complex in Hiroshima is continuing production as scheduled.

Separately, Fujitsu also stopped production for five days at three fabs in Japan, a spokesman for the company's U.S. chip division confirmed. It was not immediately known which fabs or products were affected.

A spokesman for Elpida Memory Inc., the DRAM joint venture between NEC and Hitachi Ltd., denied press reports coming from Japan that Hitachi's DRAM fab in Singapore has curtailed production. The spokesman said Elpida has experienced no disruption to the scheduled supply of DRAMs from Hitachi and NEC.
