In my opinion, Oracle is in a better position than MSFT, because you cannot easily move away from paying Oracle, once you have chosen it. When you have put all your data into an Oracle database, you just want to have a service contract on that, and want to buy clever and well educated consultants to take care of your precious data.

I still consider Microsoft Exchange to be MSFTs most valuable product, because the Exchange product is the main reason not to switch from MSFT to other products. It's a little like Oracle database servers. But still, it is far more manageable to switch from MS Office to StarOffice, from Windows file servers to Linux file servers, and the SQL servers can typically convert to stand-alone NT servers with no domain attached.

When you look at ORCL and MSFTs future - then look at how PC sales are going (MSFT) and how data usage is rising fast (ORCL). I'm in no doubt about which of the two that has the biggest potential.
