They're big -- but not nearly what the cost of unnecessary testing and procedures run.

30 years ago when a kid got a bump on the head, the parents were told in the ER to "watch him" for a couple days and most of the time, that was fine. Today, that same kid gets a $10,000 workup in the ER including a CT and a night in the hospital.

Yet, a doctor observing the kid for a few minutes in many situations is totally adequate. But the cost of the doctor missing that call could be so devastating to the doctor and provide comfort to the parents, so they go with the CT scan. THIS is the REAL cost of unlimited litigiousness.
