The fishmonger over at the Inq tries to make this sound portentous, but I think it sounds ominously so. It makes me think Sun is going through yet another struggle among internal factions, this time concerning Opteron, with McNealy leaving the helm vacant while the fiefdoms slug it out. I hope not.

Edit: To be blunt, I am repelled by Sun's assertion that "Solaris x86 runs fine in 32-bit mode on opteron, and we're looking into whether any more than that is needed" on the day of the big Opteron server announcement. That is the same as saying "some people in here want to back it, others are afraid it will cannibalize blah blah blah". 32-bit x86 software runs properly on a chip that is supposed to run 32-bit x86 software? Well whoop-de-frickin-doo, as they say.

It is in my personal view a FAILURE on the part of Sun management.
