The decline in volume, is because AMAT has been transforming itself. It has gone from:

Momentum stock in 1999, to
growth stock in 2001, to
value stock in 2002,
cyclical trading stock 2003-2008,
dividend stock today,
"widows and orphans stock" by 2012, and finally
Buffett will buy it all and take it private in 2014, when the S&P 500 hits a PE of 7.
