I've visited Mona the Elephant practacly every year since I can remember. Goodbye Mona. Elephant at El Paso Zoo dies 10/8/01 12:38 PM By: Associated Press Mona the elephant has died. The El Paso icon and grand dame of the El Paso zoo for nearly 45 years died yesterday morning, apparently of natural causes related to old age. She was estimated to have been 52 years old. Yesterday was the last day of the zoo's 2001 Elephant Festival and the day after zoo employees and guests had a birthday celebration for the female Asian elephant. The zoo remained open yesterday during its regular hours, but entertainment for the last day of the festival was canceled. Zoo employees described the elephant's death as "peaceful'' with staff members by her side throughout the night. The zoo is considering burying the elephant at the zoo and erecting a monument in her honor. TP
