>>LARCHMONT, N.Y.--(BW HealthWire)--March 15, 2002--Mary Ann Liebert, president and CEO of Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers announced today that Tara O'Toole, M.D., M.P.H. and Thomas V. Inglesby, M.D. will be the Co-editors in Chief of the newly announced quarterly journal, BIOSECURITY: Biodefense Strategy, Practice, and Science, the first issue of which will be published in print and online in winter 2002. (www.liebertpub.com/bsp)

Dr. O'Toole is currently the Director of the Johns Hopkins University Center for Civilian Biodefense Strategies, which is sponsored by the Hopkins Schools of Public Health and Medicine. Dr. Inglesby is deputy director of the Center, which is dedicated to informing policy decisions and promoting practices that would help prevent the use of biological weapons (www.hopkins-biodefense.org).

BIOSECURITY will cover bioscience, medical and public health response, infrastructure and institutions, international collaborations, agroterror/food safety, and citizen response and responsibility.

In accepting the position of co-editors in chief, Dr. O'Toole and Dr. Inglesby said today that, ``Our intention is that BIOSECURITY become an international forum for debate and exploration on the many issues posed by biological weapons and terrorism. We believe that rigorous multidisciplinary analysis and vigorous exchange of perspectives is essential to the formulation of successful strategies for lessening the threat of deliberate epidemics. The Journal will play a significant role in establishing a cohesive and urgently needed vehicle for the establishment of major educational efforts and interaction on issues of research, policy, prevention, and preparedness.''

``There is an urgent need for this journal,'' said Mary Ann Liebert. ``Tara O'Toole and Thomas Inglesby have the international recognition and stature to bring together the leaders in government, academia, industry, and institutes of public policy that foster multidisciplinary thinking and collaborations. BIOSECURITY will make a significant contribution to the literature, to our homeland and to peace-abiding nations around the world. I am proud to be the publisher of this important and timely new journal and thank Dr. O'Toole and Dr. Inglesby for agreeing to accept the editorial responsibility for its content.''

``It has become apparent to most Americans that biological weapons represent a significant threat,'' said Drs O'Toole and Inglesby. ``What was once considered a fringe issue of interest only to military strategists and historians is now a central concern of a range of professions and fields of expertise -- including national security experts, bioscientists, public health practitioners, clinicians and bioethicists. In the course of asking already overburdened individuals to participate in the creation of BIOSECURITY, we have met with uniformly enthusiastic responses -- itself an affirmation of the need for this new journal.''
