Would anyone be surprised if Intel sold off its NIC/Ethernet business
to Compaq? I wouldn't. Intel would continue to make the chip set and the single chip ethernet for motherboards and Compaq could manufacture the ISA-PCI cards and Hubs in their SMC facilities. Compaq has stated they want to be more in the Network Equipment side of the industry and Intel really hates low margin business that is away from their core business. Compaq has shown some new technology for PCI and NICS i.e. Hot Swap-able network cards and RAID controllers. Intel has also shown some new tehnology i.e Wake on Lan feature. Just an idea.
