Sherlund (GS) says -
Management of Microsoft is disclosing far less data about the monthly tone of business, so we have extrapolated from industry trends without implying as much precision in our estimates as we might otherwise be able to offer if management were willing to comment

This is the problem with Reg FD. The FCC as usual made a big mistake in its governance. It thought that reg FD force management not to give "non-public" information to analysts putting every investor on an even footing. However, this has just led to a real problem which doesn't allow ANY investor to know anything TILL the management tells them the whole story. Unfortunately, I don't think it is a good idea for the CFO to respond to each rumor with the whole story. That job belongs to an analyst who talks to not only the company, but does independent investigating (and confirms it with management). This reg FD could have caused sherlund to be slightly less or slightly more aggressive in his cuts leading to big losses or gains for investors depending on whether they are long or short.
