No I have not said, suggested, implied or hinted, that trade (esp. if you limit it just to international trade which was the subject under discussion) was an answer to every problem. Your arguments against that idea are total straw man arguments.

It requires a nation to develop a plan to reduce that dependency.....like Brazil did with energy.

Brazil has more oil production for the size of their economy. Take that fact away and they are no longer "independent". And its not even clear that the drive for independence really helped Brazil. The oil part probably would have happened anyway, just from the normal drive for profit, the alcohol part is more complex and uncertain in terms of it it was a net benefit when you include indirect and opportunity costs. And that's in a country that is in a much better position to produce alcohol as fuel, the same effort in the US has clearly been a net negative.

Do you think every country should try to be energy independent? If so do you think its worth all the trillions it would cost?
