Business Wire - March 18, 1999 12:46
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 1999--

New Enhanced Internet Explorer 5 Browser Available

For Download From www.altavista.com

AltaVista Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ), announced today the availability of a special AltaVista-branded version of Internet Explorer 5, Microsoft's powerful Internet browser.

AltaVista has added a variety of customized features to Internet Explorer 5, including AltaVista's language translation capabilities (AV Babel Fish Translation Center); and the AV Tracker; to capitalize on the browser's added flexibility and ease of integration. These new features are designed to complement the strengths of AltaVista with the powerful browser functions of Internet Explorer 5.

As a Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 launch partner, AltaVista will offer the browser for free by downloading from the popular AltaVista Internet guide ( www.altavista.com or www.av.com ).

"AltaVista is dedicated to providing users with the most comprehensive Internet experience," said Rod Schrock, President and CEO of AltaVista Company. "By adding AltaVista's unique features directly to the Internet Explorer 5 browser, we are ensuring our users have instant access to the most powerful and useful site on the Web."

"Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 offers content providers the unique ability to provide their customers a fully customized Web experience that showcases their specific solutions," said Rob Bennett, group product manager of Windows, Microsoft Corp. "We are excited that AltaVista has taken advantage of this opportunity by offering a customized version of Internet Explorer 5 that integrates many of its leading services and enables users to experience all that the Web has to offer."

Added Features and Functionality

The AltaVista customized version of Internet Explorer 5 holds enormous appeal for all types of users: from frequent searchers who will benefit from one-click access to the AltaVista Internet guide, to experienced surfers seeking to maximize productivity and time savings. It is loaded with many easy-to-use functions designed to enhance the user's experience, including:

-- AV Babel Fish Translation Center -- AV Babel Fish Translation

Center allows users to instantly translate web pages into a

selected language. AV Babel Fish Translation Center is an

existing AltaVista feature now incorporated into the Internet

Explorer 5 toolbar for immediate access. For example, with a

click of the button, a user can translate a web page in French to

English, or English to French. Other languages supported include

German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

-- AV Tracker -- AV Tracker is a personalized Explorer bar in

Internet Explorer 5 that is updated regularly, enabling users to

keep apprised of the latest news, weather, sports and stock

information without disrupting their browsing activities.

-- Finds Similar Pages -- With the click of a mouse, users can find

pages similar to the contents of the Web page viewed. Much like

having a research assistant on call, users can search for related

links, find specific pages that link to the page being viewed,

and find other pages hosted on the same domain.

-- Right Click Functionality -- The new customized version also

allows users to highlight a word or group of words, right click

on the mouse and instantly conduct an AltaVista search on the

word or phrase. This function also works with AltaVista's

translation capability, allowing for easy translation of a

selected word or phrase.

-- Direct Links -- The AltaVista customized version will also

showcase special custom links on the toolbar to AltaVista's

specific features and services, such as AV PhotoFinder, AV

Categories, AV Shopping and AV Maps. These links provide users

with instantaneous access to AltaVista's many innovative

offerings.
