Allan, - The only total market cap figures I have are for 12/31/97 and are NYSE ~ $13.1 trillion, NASDAQ ~$ 3.0 trillion, and AMEX ~ $1.1 trillion. So with a total market cap of the three major US markets of ~ $17 trillion, and $127.7 billion in margin debt outstanding on 12/31/97, the relative percentage is pretty insignificant. However the growth rate of the raw margin debt numbers indicate that some pretty heavy speculation is taking place in the markets, and should things not go the way many "investors" think, the ensuing margin calls will magnify any downturn in stock prices. IMO, the next 3 months of 1998 should prove to be very interesting.
