...ah yes,....the calamity...... ;-}>

After chowing down a can of (precious little) pork fat and beans, he pulled on his plaid jacket and Quebec block heater, grabbed his axe and headed off down the path that ran along the nearby stream. Ugly raced ahead, pausing occasionally to afford him the chance to catch up. He walked with a stooped back and dragged one leg slightly. Such was his determination, that few who met him realized that his right leg was made entirely of wood.. hewn with his own axe and adzed as smooth as a bone...

The trail led across the stream over mossy rocks, made slippery by the gushing rivulets that burst over them. But his step was true and unfaltering... he could walk this walk with closed eyes.

After the stream, the trail rose slowly towards the crest of a great granite cliff above. And on that crest, poised above it, like a battle standard... was "The Tree"....

**any allusion to Ernest Buckler's "The Mountain and The Valley" is purely coincidental... and should be regarded as such unless any of us wishes to turn this into a postmodernist piece of metafiction.. ;-}>
