thankyou for the pointer.

the ftp upload is fairly stright forward.
I have several scripts that create all the reduced image content and thus I control the naming conventions and the directory structure.

On a linux or unix system ftp can be started with the standard input that is normally the keyboard changed to a file that is just the text commands listed one per line.
the page watman.com has many sub image links. So as I create all the related images I also write the list of upload commands to automate uploading and the subdirectory creation.

While in the local directory /hda4/WATMAN_ROOT/watson/3Dpics/JAN_09_01 I run a script and it creates file put_page.

[ 1134 ] > cat put_page
prompt this turns off interactive mode
cd /watson/3Dpics
mkdir JAN_09_01
cd JAN_09_01
pwd
lcd
mkdir thumbs
mkdir anaglyph
mkdir 640x480
mkdir 320x240
mkdir crops
mkdir PAIR
mkdir XPAIR
mput thumbs/g16*.jpg
put mini_list.html
put make3wide_ana.html
mput anaglyph/mvc*.jpg
mput 640x480/mvc*.jpg
mput 320x240/mvc*.jpg
mput PAIR/PAIR*.jpg
mput XPAIR/XPAIR*.jpg
mput crops/mvc*.jpg
mput mvc*.jpg

all I have to do is ftp watman.com <put_page
This also assumes .... linux and unix that I have a .netrc file that defines my user name ans passwd for my ftp account at my url.
