I think those Rods are actually Djinn.

Djinn are inter-dimensional, hang around caves and reportedly; lost the contest for most favored species here.We won.

Many Djinn still hate our species for having won the most favored species contest. Possibly because they were older than we were when the contest and their fate was decided.

Supposedly, Djinn are better at instilling fear in us than our own ability at instilling fear in them. In some Islamic regions the name ' Djinn ' still isn't spoken out loud. Obviously, they are still feared in those regions.

And that sums up this evenings Sunday school class ggersh.
