The Afghanistan operation was, IMO, completely justified and appropriate. It didn’t eliminate AQ, but its adverse effect on AQ was real and well worth the commitment of resources. I can’t say the same for Iraq.

Two quite different situations.
I do not believe the primary reason for attacking Iraq was to attempt to deal a death blow to AQ.
I don't recall knowing anyone who thought that at the time.
