NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The price/earnings ratio of the Standard & Poor's 500 index at the close of trading Friday, March 8, was
41.12.

Thursday, the ratio was 40.88.

A year ago, the ratio was about 23.20.

The lowest price/earnings ratio on the S&P 500 came in the second quarter of 1949, when the reading slipped to 5.9. Over the last decade,
the low was 15.77 in the first quarter of 1995.

The price/earnings ratio, known as the multiple, is a measure of the average stock price divided by the average earnings per share. The
earnings data is based on the trailing four quarters.
