"H1N1 mutates at a faster rate and seems to be hopping species." H1N1 is a unique flu as it has genetic components from three species, birds, pigs and humans. This gives it a built in predilection to mutate in ways that can be harmful for us, with the human and pig (closely related to us) components. The avian component lends to it being widespread through bird migration. Scientists consider the worse case scenario, because we'll hold them responsible if it occurs and we aren't prepared. Their fears are a reflection of how terrible a worse case scenario will be. It WILL occur, sooner or later. Consider, countless billions of viri, each one with the potential to mutate in a harmful way and propogate. Scary. H1N1 is just ONE dangerous virus. There are millions, many much more terrible. All it will take is for one of these to mutate in such a way as to infect as an airborne virus. Most don't do this now. bihartimes.com
