>>Everyone always underestimates the US.<<

Just as we underestimated Al-Qaida and other terrorist factions... And I don't underestimate what attacks may occur in the future, especially with the information that they obtained suitcase nukes (which would be very destructive, but not necessarily a death blow to the US).

The US had 12 million men and women in uniform during WWII.. Right now we have around 1.3 million active, and 1.2 million reservists...

But we have to also remember that the US military structure has traditionally been long on logistics and combat support, and generally lighter on actual combat strength (also known as the "tooth to tail ratio")... Which means that combat unit deployments are more frequent than many of their logistical support units.

And Combat MOS's were, prior to 9/11, generally understaffed.. I'm not sure how the deficiency is being rectified since then.. But it takes time to man and train these new recruits.
