Well, I know that places like China and Mexico have reduced birth rate tremendously and their populations continue to grow because of falling death rate... and that will eventually flatten out. Makes sense to me. OTOH, that doesn't insure by any stretch of the imagination that it will end up being a "plateau". It could continue up for a period at a slower rate (from your link):

"It forecasts there will be nearly 9.1bn people by 2050, just under a 50% increase from the 6.2bn in 2002. "

Or the way the eco-system keeps degrading there could be a crash. We're at the top of the food web, and we need a LOT of production underneath us to hold us up.
