It continues to amaze me that you've joined the greatest threat to liberterian values in our lifetime, the social conservatives.
Why? The line in that speech was about "values" vs "Hollywood." If I had been at the Rockerfella "Gala," I would have had to come home and take a bath. Do I think "family," for instance, is worth preserving? Certainly. Do I think "gangsta rap," for instance,is an excrescence?" Obviously. I believe you must be conflicted on some of these issues as I am on some of mine.
I think the collapse of the left's main source of values, Socialism, has left it with a laundry list of minor issues, connected by it's pressure groups. I have an easier time putting up with your bugaboo, the religious right, than I would with the union bosses and communists on the left.
But the core of it, from my libertarian viewpoint, is freedom. The American left contains the "greatest threat ot libertarian values," IMO. This last century's monster regimes almost all on came out of the left. Hitler used a "socialist workers party," during his rise, whither or not you think he was on the "right." The slave pens of the Eastern Urals and Asia were caused by people who believed in utopian socialism. And that urge is still within the left here. Remember, all the apologies for what went on over there came from our left.
The attempt by Academia to shut down free speech as "hate" is very telling to me. Give Liberals the power, and they run for social control just as much as the religious right. So that issue is a wash on both sides.
It may be "false alternatives," but I choose that side with the best chance of retaining freedom, I think.
And of course, all of the above is moot when you look at the number one issue of this century, the stamping out of the muslim religious barbarians. All else pales before it. And on that issue it is very black and white in favor of the right. |
