In Canada, if you are released into custody of a responsible adult (before you are deemed responsible) then the responsible adult must accept responsibility (within reason) for your safety.

In other cases, the drinker should be responsible for his/her actions. Everything the drinker did was a matter of choice, regardless of impairment. He/she knew before each drink that it was adding to the impairment. There may be some justification for considering drinking as regards sentencing; there ought to be none as regards guilt or responsibility.
