OK, I see the difference, and I see your point. No doubt, there are ways for informal "guilds" to form, and to earn (or fail to earn) respect from the customers, without the State getting involved.

But, the politicians will never go for that. Those 1800 bills before state legislatures are not about eliminating licensing, like what Friedman was talking about, but to the contrary - about expanding it to new groups of people. I think it's funny that the author of the article used Friedman to support his demand for more licensing... :)
