yes, agreed. However, the difference was that when Japan was rising economically, the US was galvanized into action. We took on that challenge and we won. Winning didn't mean crushing Japan, but it did mean learning from what they did well and competing successfully.

Nowadays, we're so distracted by the politics of this country and two wars and Al Qaeda and health care, that we aren't spending enough time really thinking about the economic priorities of this country.

If I were President, my top priorities would be 1) ensuring that we have a diverse energy future that includes nuclear, natural gas, and renewable energy as key components, 2) creating a cohesive economic policy wrt China that includes penalties for keeping their currency artificially low and incentives for free market moves and control over US investment in China, and 3) I'd balance the damn budget come hell or high water.

China is getting away from us. They are far ahead of us on renewable energy investments. Their economy is strong and they are sticking it to us with their currency peg to the dollar. They are continually hacking our greatest companies to mine them for intellectual capital. And we're not fighting back!

I've said this before many times, but China is the biggest challenge this country has faced since the Cold War. We'd better get our act in gear. Al Qaeda is a knat on our ass. China is the Rhino galloping right towards us with its horn pointed in our direction. Either we get skewered or we figure out what direction we want the Rhino to go in. We can win, but we need to be focused. Google's hew and cry should be a clarion call to action on the part of the US government.
