After the market closed, Amkor Technology (AMKR: news, msgs) reported second-quarter earnings of $51 million, or 33 cents a share, compared with $16 million, or 13 cents a share. Analysts expected a profit of 31 cents a share. Revenue totaled $547 million, up 22 percent compared with $450 million in the year-ago period. Gross margin for the quarter rose to 23 percent from 20 percent in the year-ago period. The company noted its effective tax rate decreased to 15 percent, due to higher levels of profitability in entities that are subject to tax holidays. The company expects its tax rate to remain in the 15 to 17 percent range in the third and fourth quarter of 2000.
