Yes.

IMO this is a very great threat to the democratic process.

I don't share that opinion and even if I did I care more about freedom then our democratic process. I support the democratic process largly as the best way to ensure a reasonable level of freedom. I do see it as a goal itself not just as a way to support freedom, but I don't want a democracy that is two wolves and a sheep deciding what to have for dinner.

BTW - You have not been making a distinction between political contributions to candidates, and individuals or political groups trying to get their message out. Do you think that the NRA or a group that supports gun control, or NARAL or a Right to Life group, pushing their ideas is a threat to the democratic process? I disagree. I think it is a vital part of the democratic process and shutting them up is the threat not an answer to the threat.
