Andy - Re: "IBM, C4 and.. Did we have to pay a lot for this patent?" Yes and No. No - since IBM and Intel have a broad cross licensing agreement on patents. Yes - in the fact that the above mentioned cross license now permits IBM to make x86 CPUs for the Clones 'R US crowd - Cyrix, AMD and IDT. Realistically, Intel has developed their own C4 implementation - quite a bit different than IBM/AMD. The IBM approach uses more DRY deposition techniques and pattern/etching/reflowing to make the solder bumps. Intel developed their own technology using WET PLATING processes - additive. They photomask their wafers and selectively plate the alloys onto the specific locations on the die/wafers eliminating an etching step. Paul
