Bob,

I occasionally invite some of my deer hunting friends to go dove hunting with me. After shooting 4 or 5 boxes of shells without clipping the first feather, these great deer hunters become very frustrated and perplexed. When they ask, "Lee what the heck am I doing wrong?" I tell them,"If you shoot where they're at, you'll miss every time; you have to shoot where they are going. You have to lead them."

AMD and Cyrix are shooting where Intel is at now, not where they are going. They simply do not have the research capability to "lead" Intel. In other words, by the time they are shipping their chips in sufficient quantities to gain any market share, Intel will be transitioning to the next generation and slashing prices on Pentium and PPro. This strategy has worked well in the past. I'm sure there are many good arguments why it won't work this time. I won't believe any of them unless I see it happen. IMHO, Andy & Co. knew long ago what AMD and Cyrix have coming down the pipe, and have the strategy and tools in place to effectively deal with any threat.
