IBM/MOT Nixing NT on PPC! Is this bad?
1) IBM/CMPQ and others stopped offering NT on *Intel* machines because of the high support costs. With the MacOS and AIX comprising 95% of PPC sales, why NOT let MSFT do the heavy lifting?
2) With 500 mhz PPC speeds (300mhz on non-Exponential) and no counter from Intel, Gates must have concerns (with all his cash, I don't know why he'd worry about anything!) Ellen Hancock once remarked that APPL had discussed an NT license but the "costs" were too high -- support for MSFT's Active-X, and other considerations. Wouldn't IBM/MOT's move may induce MS to let AAPL offer/develop NT/PPC products?
3) And might not that not be leverage for AAPL to close the Be deal at a reasonable price? AAPL has also made noises about doing a 100% Java OS(!)
4) Assuming the above, we have the scenario APPL with the best hardware PPC/Exponential as well as the best software options -- MacOS, NT, AIX, Be, Java -- in one box. Bad?
I know I'm jumping around here but I thought I'd open the door for comments.

(BTW, I got a Newton 120 last month to play with, I think the OS on this thing is way cool. I think the new 162 mhz machines have the potential to turn computing concepts on its head!) |
