Michael and Victor: I found out more information on the new A900 printer and as a shareholder, my first thought was nuts, nuts, nuts: this printer is not going to be available until April [read: will not add to the 1Q bottom line].

Here is the URL where you can click on items to get full information on the printer:

compaq.com

I telephoned Compaq's Product Information number (1-800-345-1318) and was told this printer will be sold at all retail stores that sell CPQ products right now. The fellow started rattling off the names, which include CompUSA, Radio Shack, Office Max, Staples, Best Buy, etc. When I asked him for you, Victor, if this printer would be sold in the U.K. his direct quote was, "That, my dear, I really can not tell. This paper here just gives me stores in this here America."

He read me most of the specs which I assume are also given at the web site. Before you take a look, it is a dual head ink jet with 1200X1200 dots per inch with "laser sharp text." It prints up to 8 pp./minute in b/w and up to 4 pp./minute in color. In all, its sounds like a great buy. It even has adjustments so photocopies can be reduced by 25% and enlarged up to 200% in 1% increments--and it will even collate up to 99 pages!

I do not have a color printer either, Michael. For me this will be a second printer which I shall use mostly for scanning, photocopying, an occasional fax, and a rare color print job.

Victor, if you are in the market for a laser printer, let me know and I'll look for the information I saved (somewhere) on the HP and Xerox printers I considered.

I think this is going to be one hot printer. After speaking with the man at CPQ and before writing this reply I called one of my brothers. He is hot, hot, hot to get one (also as a second printer) and was going to call one of his friends to hold off buying a fancy new fax machine until he too takes at look at this printer. After I post this, I'm e-mailing him the URL cited above.

P.S. I tried to get a sense of sales from the fellow, but I got the w-r-o-n-g person. He got off on a philosophical discussion about the meaninglessness of the moment. Trying to get him back down to Compaq by asking him what he, as an employee, thought of CPQ's employee share purchase program, he said he had no interest in the stock of CPQ or any other company for that matter--then swithced back to our previous philosophical discussion. Maybe he is a part time CPQ employee, full time grad student in philosophy at the U. of Houston??
