You wouldn't be implying that all Dell needs to do is to slap on skins, doors, their logo and load software, would you? Do you think Intel will tell them in advance how tall the doors need to be? ;-]
Seriously, I know that Compaq for one ships their server nodes, storage, etc. in boxes. The customer gets to assemble the overall server himself. One curiosity out of this is that Compaq gets away with a very tall cabinet...too tall to ship standing up in standard airplanes (doorway not high enough). However, with no "load" in the cabinet, it can be put in on its side. Some companies consider this not a good strategy, because maybe the server doesn't get tested adequately before shipping. I wonder what Dell does. Actually, if went to their web site, I could tell by the height of the biggest Dell server. Later.
