"Simplifying...if the Taliban is focused on instigating or inciting the US to destroy the rest of Islam, shouldn't the rest of Islam be trying to stop the Taliban? Seems intuitive...why let your neighbor wake up the lion when you're cleaning the cage?
Right. I noticed something was wrong with my response when I reread it and edited the word 'They' to 'The Taliban' probably skips the light fan dango...
You were probably already composing your next post. But it seems we are now on the same page.
Yes the rest of Islam should be trying to stop the Taliban and the Taliban has plenty of Islamic groups that are enemies to it. It becomes very complicated if you try to sort out the contingencies into those for us and against the Taliban and why, or visa versa. It becomes more complicated when Europeans, Asians, Africans, and leaders like Chaves mix their anti-Americanisms into it. It is a very diverse population of 1.4 billion we are talking about and I haven't found 2 that see everything eye to eye.
The Sunni Taliban would rather kill Shi'ites than us and the Shi'ite Mahdi Army would rather kill Sunnis than us, but they are both ready to kill us just the same. Then there is a continuum of people who are Muslims who don't favor the USA any more than our citizens would favor Syrian culture in a dispute with Ukranians. So there are lots of people in the world who don't give it a lot of thought but if you asked them over tea they'd probalby say they are ready to let us burn in our own stew. The Taliban and other terrorist organizations know how to feed that.
People are not as knowledgeable of the issues as they need to be in order to take the kind of rational position you suggest. In addition, there may not be anyone to challenge them when they begin to talk trash, propagandize, or simply lie as you see longnshort et al doing on this thread.
Its a serious situation and the only thing we have at this point is our willingness to stand on principle ... or not. If we can do that with some strength, accross cultures, nationalities and ideologies, we have some hope. |
