FL-SEN: Game over for Crist ... if he stays Republican

Rasmussen. 1/27. Likely voters. MoE 5% (12/14 results)

Republican senate primary

Charlie Crist (R) 37 (43)
Marco Rubio (R) 49 (43)

Has Rubio spent even a dime on television advertisements? Heck, the upstart hasn't even raised that much money, especially for a state as massive as Florida. This is pretty much a grassroots uprising by Florida conservatives.

Now these numbers are a little crazier than Quinnipiac's a week ago, which gave Rubio a 47-44 lead, but they don't seem out of whack with the sharp recent trend against Crist. Whether Rubio leads by a handful or double digits, it's clear that Rubio is ahead and has all the momentum. Meanwhile, hobnobbing with Obama isn't going to make Crist's job any easier with the teabagger crowd.

Everyone I talk to in Florida tells me that Crist is the ultimate political survivor, that he'll do whatever it takes to win. Well, I don't believe, and I won't believe it until he switches to the Democratic Party. Because if he wants to win his state's Senate seat, it's the only way he has a shot at it.
