"But then I think it still does happen some time. Evil people turn away from the error of their ways, irrational/insane people get treatment, and sometimes it helps."

When I use the term heinous, I am thinking of abominable crimes that are serious like murder, rape, or torture but which also involve some sort of sadistic cruelty.

I am not aware of any, that's why I asked if you or anyone here has ever heard of one. Even though you personally may be able to tolerate or forgive one of these perps, that does not reconcile them with the victim. Even if the victim was able to forgive them, some people in society would not be able to tolerate them with the same consideration they view their other neighbors. If they could, I would agree that resolute reconciliation is possible ... I think its a myth with regards to heinous criminals that we'd be better off dispelling. Would you ever be comfortable with a sadistic child raping murderer living next door to your children or grand children?
