Assuming that Bill Clinton wants John Kerry to lose, (highly probable), by warning Kerry to stay away from these issues, Clinton is doing his best to highlight Kerry's weaknesses

Nah, I think you're not giving Clinton enough credit for subtlety. He wants to build his rep as a sage counselor, so he will specialize in giving Kerry very sound advice - but advice that he knows Kerry won't be able to take. Kerry needs to deflect the Rep values campaign by turning the campaign onto social policy issues such as health care. No signs that Kerry has a strategy to do this. If Kerry tries to face down 'values' in a frontal assault, he will lose, and Clinton can look sage but sad about it.
