AMD's Dresden FAB plans a shrink from .18 to .13 in that time frame. Such a shrink is usually (but not always) good for about a doubling of clock speed. That would bring Athlon to between 2.2GHZ and 2.8GHZ in the time frame you are discussing.

These things often don't happen on schedule, sometimes they don't happen at all. So either P4 or .13 Athlon could be late or have problems next spring. AMD has a lot more experience producing Athlon than Intel has experience producing P4, while P4 is a newer design. My recollection is that P4 design was actually started earlier than Athlon design, but it is still probably targeting higher ultimate clock speeds which would presumably make it easier to scale (which would help Intel to counter AMD's much greater production experience with the Athlon core).

I'd say it's too early to call this one.
