I know. I thought he had the political capital to do it too. But notice that Bush was street smart. He waited to go for a big change like that until his second term. So it couldn't hurt him later. Obama is a smart guy, but it was a strategic blunder to go after health care in his first term.

My dad and I agree on this one. He should have gone after something simple and sure. Right after he got elected, he should have pushed for a package of energy proposals, including renewable energy, drilling everywhere, and nuclear power. That would have secured him a win and built confidence that our government can solve problems. Instead, he spent all his capital on the stimulus and health care. The rest is history. He may very well be a lame duck for the rest of his Presidency, even with an ongoing majority in Congress beyond November.

It'll be interesting to see if he can turn it around. If I were him, I'd pick something small and start working my way back up, building on small, but frequent successes.
