Some good questions raised there and ones I certainly spend a lot of time thinking about. My company has developed a terminal/server architecture for mobile wireless devices that works very well over CDPD networks (maybe 19Kb at best). Over a GPRS network, our terminal would scream. You can't do streaming video at that speed but I'm not sure there's a need for that right now. Short of coverage issues for CDPD, technology exists right now to deliver robust, performant applications to mobile wireless devices, without 3G. I still think it will happen, but it may end up taking longer than the hype would lead one to believe.
